Richard D. Gidron, a politically savvy Bronx businessman who became one of America's earliest and most successful black owners of a Cadillac dealership before falling on hard times and going to prison for a year for fraud and tax evasion, died Thursday at a New York hospital. He was 68 and lived in Scarsdale. Mr. Gidron died at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, said his son, Richard Jr., who declined to disclose the cause of death. For three decades, Dick Gidron, as he was known to a generation of car buyers as well as mayors, congressmen, star athletes and other celebrities, presided over an empire of Cadillac, Oldsmobile and Ford dealerships that began in the Bronx and moved into Yonkers, Mt. Kisco and Mahopac. Starting as a teenage car jockey parking Caddies at a dealership in Chicago in 1957, Mr. Gidron, a born salesman, learned his trade when America's craze with Cadillacs inspired visions of stardom and celebrity -- of Elvis Presley whizzing through Memphis in a gold Cadillac and of Sugar Ray Robinson cruising the streets of Harlem in a flamingo pink convertible. In 1972, when General Motors wanted a minority owner for its Bronx Cadillac franchise, it selected Mr. Gidron, by then one of its top salesmen, over competitors who included Sammy Davis Jr. and Henry Aaron. He thus became New York's first African-American Cadillac dealer and the second in the nation. By 1980, with annual sales of $45 million, Mr. Gidron was among the top 10 Cadillac dealers in the United States. He acquired three homes, a 36-foot yacht and a host of prominent friends and political connections. He was president of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce for more than 10 years in the 1980s and '90s, and was chairman of the Bronx County Democratic Committee for several years in the 1980s. On his showroom walls were photos of Mr. Gidron with President Ronald Reagan, Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, Mother Teresa and Muhammad Ali. Super Bowl parties at his home drew a pantheon of judges, politicians and celebrities. Friends included George Steinbrenner, the principal owner of the Yankees; Stanley M. Friedman, the former Bronx Democratic leader; Mayor David N. Dinkins; State Senator Guy J. Velella; Representatives Mario Biaggi and Charles B. Rangel; and Dave Winfield, the Yankees slugger. But by the 1990s, as the nation's love affair with Cadillacs waned, America's most prestigious car had become an outsize relic, overtaken by fuel-efficient imports and other luxury brands. As Mr. Gidron's sales plummeted, he fell behind in his corporate taxes, General Motors terminated his franchise, and revenue agents seized parts of his business. In 2002, Mr. Gidron was indicted on charges of evading more than $1.5 million in state and federal taxes from the sale and leasing of cars from 1995 to 2000. In 2003, he pleaded guilty to two counts of grand larceny and one of offering a false instrument for filing -- admitting that he kept car payments meant for lending institutions -- and was ordered to pay $1.6 million in restitution and sentenced to three years of home confinement and five years of probation. In 2005, state tax agents shut down Gidron Cadillac-Oldsmobile in Yonkers, seizing assets for what they said was his failure to pay more than $800,000 in sales taxes. Three other Gidron dealerships were also closed. Mr. Gidron was arrested after a monitor appointed to oversee his business charged that he had again kept car payments intended for lending institutions. He pleaded guilty to violating probation and defrauding nine victims of up to $100,000, and was sentenced to one to three years in prison. State officials said his former dealerships still owed $12 million in taxes. In 2006, Mr. Gidron emerged from a year in prison, said he hoped to make a comeback and sued General Motors for $150 million, charging that the automaker had reneged on a deal to sell him an auto repair center in Yonkers that he had restored at a cost of millions after it was damaged in a fire in 2000. The suit is pending. Richard Daniel Gidron was born in Chicago on Oct. 10, 1939, and was raised by his mother and grandmother after his father died when he was 7. At 19, he got a job in a Cadillac dealership on Chicago's South Side. He went to night school but learned salesmanship on the lot and in the showroom. By 26, he had become Cadillac's first black salesman, a natural who did not come across as a super pitchman but moved cars with drumbeat regularity. Besides his son, of Scarsdale, Mr. Gidron is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Bridgett Gidron of Scarsdale; two sisters, Dorothy J. Holmes of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Freddie M. Kessee of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; a brother, Thomas Parker of Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

"Researchers at the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Japan have carried out a life-cycle analysis of beef production which shows that 'a kilogram of beef leads to the emission of greenhouse gases with a warming potential equivalent of 36.4 kilograms of CO2' (New Scientist, 21.7.07). To help you get your head around this, that's equivalent to the amount of CO2 emitted by the average car over a distance of 250 kilometres." "Researchers at the University of Chicago have calculated the relative carbon intensity of a standard vegan diet in comparison to a US-style carnivorous diet, all the way through from production to processing to distribution to cooking and consumption. An average burger man (that is, not the outsize variety) emits the equivalent of 1.5 tonnes more CO2 every year than the standard vegan. By comparison, were you to trade in your conventional gas-guzzler for a state of the art Prius hybrid, your CO2 savings would amount to little more than one tonne per year." Meat consumption is killing us in a multitude of ways. Outsize sleeves in digital format are produced by Frisiapack in Holland as Andries Smit here explains. PLEASE LEAVE A STAR RATING! My channel on you tube : http://www.youtube.com/alanheath is one of the most prolific from Poland, although unfortunately not the most visited. With almost one film per day, one may be forgiven for thinking I do nothing else but I do have a day job as well. I have produced almost 600 original films, most in English but also in Polish, French, Italian, Spanish and the occassional hint of German and Hebrew. My big interest in life is travel and history but I have also placed films on other subjects Please feel free to ask questions in the public area or to comment on things you disagree with. Sometimes there are mistakes because I speak without preparation. If I see the mistakes myself, I make this clear in the text. Please also leave a star rating! There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- http://www.ceepackaging.com - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focussing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers. Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine! Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film! In 1997 I founded Polish Business News http://www.pbn.com.pl .There are a number of business related films here and I intend to do many more on CRM (customer relations management). My blog can be found via http://www.ceepackaging.com and http://www.pbn.com.pl and contains background information and more details of many of my films. This information is in English.

Luxury Studies: The correct pronunciation of the watchmaker Officine Panerai. Additional reading on most significant model: http://imperialhotelmanagementcollegestudent.blogspot.com/2008/02/luxury-studies-legendary-watches-1931.html Officine Panerai - Radiomir (1938/1998) Panerai's first appearance on the international market really came in 1998, a year after it was bought by Richemont which had grasped the potential of the neglected Florentine firm. At one time, Officine Panerai had supplied diving watches to the Italian Royal Navy. The watches it made for underwater commando units in the nineteen-thirties were fitted with Rolex movements on a Cortébert base, originally intended for pocket watches. The specific usage, and subsequent need for reliability and legibility, justified these wristwatches' exceptionally large size. The model chosen to mark Panerai's revival as a brand for the general public looked back sixty years: the Radiomir Replica was a reissue of a 1938 model, this time in a limited edition of sixty. Limited for a very good reason: each contained one of the original hand-wound Rolex movements which, of course, were in short supply. Sixty movements, still in their original packaging, had lain forgotten among Officine Panerai's stock. The platinum case of this limited edition measured 47 mm in diameter. Its comfortable size, like that of the Luminor which would also light the way for the brand's development, sparked a wave of enthusiasm for the outsize models that would lead watchmaking into the twenty-first century.

Speaking at a Press Conference in Nadur Gozo, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo said that the issue of a permit for the development of a garigue area containing a perched aquifer overlooking Ramla l-Hamra has created an unnecessary embarrassment for the Diocese of Gozo. "After several recommendations to refuse on valid grounds were ignored, the permit has been issued, placing Church authorities on the spot." Dr Vassallo said "The Land in question belongs to the Joint Office and the applicant is a Gozitan parish." "The construction of this new cemetery will make Nadur top the list of villages endowed with outsize cemeteries in relation to their resident populations" Dr Vassallo said. "Not only will it accommodate far more burials than those required by Nadur residents, but it will also maintain and operate its present cemetery regardless of all excuses that the present cemetery could not be extended because of its proximity to residences" "An alternative site should be sought for several reasons. The concerns of farmers have not been put at rest with assurances that the graves will be hermetically sealed and waterproofed." Dr Vassallo said "Farmers' concerns would have been satisfied were it not for the refusal by Water Services Corporation (WSC) to approve an alternative site for the cemetery at Ta' Xhajma for fear of borehole contamination. If the WSC has cause for serious concern regarding water contamination, so do the farmers." "Despite efforts by the parish to persuade residents to apply for graves, less than half of the proposed graves have been applied for" Dr Vassallo said. "Regardless of this, the applicants still describe the outsize cemetery as a necessity while proposing to sell the graves to residents of other parishes" Dr Vassallo added. Dr Vassallo said. "The absence of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is clearly in contrast with the Local Pan requirements affecting the Addolorata Cemetery. While Mepa required an EIA for the extension of the Addolorata Cemetery, for some inexplicable reason it didn't for the pristine area of Ramla l-Hamra belvedere. Instead it accepted a hydrological study carried out by a geologist and not by a hydrologist. It was as though somebody went to confession to a sacristan instead of a priest" Dr Vassallo said. "The Nadur Parish, the Diocese of Gozo and the Joint Office are still in time to ensure that no such environmental, social and economic harm takes place." Dr. Vassallo added that Alternattiva Demokratika -- The Green Party is urging that Mgr Grech, Bishop of Gozo, need not only confine himself to emphasizing "that the project should be carried out according to law", but that justice prevails. AD will pursue the matter by all available means in the planning process and beyond.

Part of that new math, says #1 New York Times bestselling author Jill Conner Browne -- whom USA Today calls "just plain funny" -- includes the addition of an outsize sense of humor to balance the equation of your growing family. The Sweet Potato Queens' Guide to Raising Children for Fun and Profit is a hilarious (though not scientifically tested) wink at the time-honored mysteries of parenting, because anybody who has ever had a kid or has ever known one knows that the experience is neither fun nor profitable -- so you might as well laugh! As each generation begins its hopeful, happy, and, yes, sometimes harrowing journey as Parent and Child, together they spawn a new body of "knowledge," the nuances of which will elude the Experts every time. Here are stories of the things we do for Mother Love -- or, the most incredibly full-time volunteer job ever -- and tips guaranteed not to be found in any other parenting guide.
